STEP 1
Check Yourself and Your Passengers for Injuries
After an accident, the first thing to do is to assess yourself and your passengers for injuries. Do your best to stay calm and look after yourself first before assisting others.
If your accident involves another vehicle or person and you are able, assess them and their passengers for injuries.
STEP 2
If Possible, Move Your Vehicle to the Side of the Road & Out of Traffic
If your vehicle is safe to operate, move it to the side of the road and out of the flow of traffic. This prevents additional accidents from occurring while you are contacting first responders or documenting the accident.
STEP 3
Contact First Responders and a Tow Truck
If anyone is injured or you would like police officers to document the accident scene, call 911. First responders will arrive to provide help to anyone who needs it.
Some police departments may come to the accident scene if requested or depending on the accident’s severity. They will likely ask what happened. You can request a copy of the report for your records and your insurance company.
If your car is not drivable, contact a tow truck to bring your vehicle to a repair center.
STEP 4
Exchange Information with the Other Driver(s)
If there is another vehicle involved in the accident or several, exchange information with those drivers. Exchanging names, numbers, and insurance details can help make the repair process proceed more smoothly.
Depending on who is at fault, their insurance may be responsible for paying for the repairs to your vehicle. The insurance companies or officers on the scene will determine who is at fault. This is not something you need to discuss with the other drivers.
STEP 5
Document the Accident
Take some time to document the scene of the accident and the vehicles involved. This can include taking photos of damage, writing down anything you want to remember, and noting the make/model of each vehicle involved.
Taking photos of the damage from several angles can help your insurance company get a better idea of the repair costs and who may be at fault.
If any witnesses to the accident have stuck around, talk to them. They may have additional information on what happened or their own photos to share with you.
STEP 6
Contact Your Insurance Company
Contact your insurance company to begin the claims and repair process. Your insurance company may have a list of approved repair centers in your area that you can use. They may also ask for photos and any additional information about the accident to determine costs, who is responsible, and what costs you may be responsible for.
